How to Choose a Trustworthy Pet Sitter

Every pet-sitting platform says its sitters are "trustworthy" — the word alone means nothing if you don't know what's actually been checked. So here's specifically what Petit-o does before a profile appears, what it doesn't do (yet), and what's worth checking on your own before you book.

What gets checked before a profile is approved

Every sitter profile goes through manual review before it appears in the app. That means checking that the profile photo clearly shows the sitter's face — photos with logos or promotional material get rejected — and that the description has enough useful information for you to get a real sense of who they are before reaching out. Average approval time is around 2 working days, though it's taken 5–6 in some cases. Until approved, a profile stays pending.

Separately, sitters who receive payments go through identity verification via Stripe — entering account details and uploading a government ID, with the name and date of birth needing to match the document or verification gets rejected. That's independent of Petit-o's own profile approval.

What isn't checked yet

To be upfront about it: profile approval doesn't currently include a criminal record check, third-party reference checks, or confirmation of a sitter's own insurance. That doesn't mean the system isn't worth trusting — it means your own judgment stays part of the equation, the same as on any platform, especially the first few times you work with a new sitter.

What's worth doing yourself before you book

Use the pre-booking chat. Petit-o has a built-in chat as soon as a sitter expresses interest in your request. Ask something specific — how they'd handle a particular habit your pet has, what they'd do if something went wrong. Vague, rushed answers often tell you more than you'd think.

Don't rush to pick the first person who shows interest. "Interested" doesn't mean selected — it just means they want the booking. You can look at multiple profiles before deciding, and the request stays open until you choose.

Read reviews carefully. They go through moderation before publishing, so you're not seeing unchecked content — but that doesn't replace reading them yourself: look for specific detail, not just star ratings.

Keep communication in-app until you've booked. Petit-o's guidance is not to exchange phone numbers, email, or your exact address before the booking is confirmed. Beyond the obvious (the sitter doesn't see your exact address until then anyway), it keeps the conversation on record, which is useful if you ever need to refer back to what was said.
